Why Build
This Rig
I've spent years shooting commercial and documentary work through BlackMagic Films. The work has taken me everywhere — but getting there with a full camera kit, lighting, and sound gear always meant renting cargo vans, cramming into rental cars, or shipping cases ahead of the crew.
The idea for the Roam Rig started on a location scout in Utah in 2023. We were camped at the edge of a canyon, the golden hour was happening, and I was watching it through a windshield because the gear was buried in the back of a rented Transit.
That was the moment. What if the vehicle was the studio? What if you could pull over anywhere, drop a tailgate, and have everything you need to shoot cinema — without setup time, without rental overhead, and without leaving the experience to operate the equipment?
The Roam Rig is the answer to that question. A Ram ProMaster 2500 High Roof conversion — planned, scoped, and starting from zero right now. The goal: a self-contained mobile production platform with a 400Ah electrical system, full off-grid capability, cinema-grade gear storage, and just enough comfort to make weeks on the road actually sustainable. The van doesn't exist yet. But the build starts the moment it does.
